Junto con la docencia, el otro pilar sobre el que se asienta el Departamento es la actividad investigadora, a la que le concedemos especial relevancia. Los miembros del Departamento de Teoría e Historia Económica de la Universidad de Málaga llevan a cabo una intensa labor investigadora en diferentes campos del Análisis Económico y de la Historia Económica. Prueba de ello es la publicación de una gran cantidad de artículos en revistas de investigación internacionales de primer nivel, tales como Econometrica, Journal of Economic Theory, Games and Economic Behavior, Macroeconomic Dynamics, Social Choice and Welfare, International Journal of Game Theory, Scandinavian Journal of Economics, Journal of Productivity Analysis, Public Choice, etc.
