Assignment - Tutor and IMEE Director

Procedure for the assignment of tutor and thesis supervisor

Once the data on new enrolments are available, a Welcome Day to the Doctoral Programme will be held in each academic year, with the participation of the Coordinator and the Academic Committee. At this event, the Programme Coordinator will provide information on the general aspects of the regulations and organization of the Doctoral Programme. In addition, a tutor will be assigned to each of the doctoral students, to guide them through the procedures to be carried out and to help them identify a possible thesis supervisor, this will be done within a maximum period of three months. The tutor must be a lecturer participating in the Doctoral Programme, with accredited research experience through the justification of being in possession of at least one six-year research period, or having merits equivalent to those required to obtain a six-year period, or having previously supervised a doctoral thesis.

The Academic Committee of the Doctoral Programme will proceed to appoint the thesis supervisor within a maximum period of 6 months after the Ph.D. student has enrolled in the program. Thesis supervision may be compatible with tutoring. In any case, the supervisor will be any Spanish or foreign doctor with equivalent merits to those required to be a tutor.

The procedure to be followed is as follows:

  • In the event that the student suggests a supervisor for his/her thesis at the time of enrolment in the program, and that supervisor agrees and is in a position to accept doctoral students that academic year, the Committee will assign that person as tutor and supervisor of the doctoral student. (As a general rule, a lecturer on a Doctoral Programme should not be assigned more than two new doctoral students per academic year).
  • If the student suggests a supervisor for his/her thesis at the time of enrolment in the program, but that person cannot accept him/her to supervise the thesis for any reason, he/she may be appointed as a tutor to help the Ph.D. student find the most appropriate supervisor for his/her thesis project.
  • If the student suggests a supervisor from outside the Doctoral Programme and a tutor from the program, and both agree, the Committee will proceed to appoint them if the program tutor is in a position to accept new doctoral students as tutors (as a general rule, a lecturer on a Doctoral Programme at the University of Malaga should not tutor more than 10 doctoral students at the same time).
  • Otherwise, the Academic Committee will choose as a tutor the lecturer of the Doctoral Programme whose line of research is the most appropriate for tutoring the doctoral student, and who is in a position to serve as a tutor.
