Aún cuando esta red se creó oficialmente a finales del año 2004 con motivo de la convocatoria de acciones complementarias MEC-2004, su origen se remonta al Año Mundial de las Matemáticas 2000 cuando Dragan Vukotic organizó en la Universidad Autónoma de Madrid una "Miniconferencia en Variable Compleja y Teoría de Operadores" y días después un minisimposio sobre el mismo tema en el Primer Congreso de la RSME que se celebró en la Universidad Complutense a finales de enero de 2000. Ambos eventos abarcaban dos temas muy relacionados entre sí: la teoría de los espacios de funciones analíticas por un lado y la teoría de operadores por otro, así como algunos aspectos de otras áreas colindantes, como son los espacios de Banach, la ciclicidad o la teoría geométrica de funciones. La importancia y la belleza de esta teoría, que se encuentra al borde de distintas disciplinas del análisis matemático, reside precisamente en los múltiples puntos de vista y enfoques que permite, así como en la posibilidad de combinar diversas técnicas: desde el análisis real y armónico hasta los métodos de espacios de Hilbert y de Banach, pasando por aspectos de la geometría hiperbólica, la teoría de probabilidad y otros. Uno de los objetivos fundamentales que se plantearon (y consiguieron) al organizar estas conferencias era precisamente reunir a algunos miembros de distintos grupos de investigación de distintas universidades españolas activos en este campo. En los años sucesivos se organizaron otros eventos semejantes:
En un ámbito más general debemos también indicar que los "VII Encuentros de Análisis Real y Complejo" fueron organizados por Daniel Girela en Torremolinos en mayo de 2002 y los "VIII Encuentros de Análisis Real y Complejo" por Óscar Blasco en Gandía en mayo de 2003. Con la organización de todos estos eventos, fueron incorporándose nuevos grupos de investigación a la red y estrechándose las relaciones entre los mismos. Esto nos hizo decidir formar oficialmente una "red temática" al amparo de la convocatoria de acciones complementarias MEC-2004. La creación oficial de la Red Temática ha motivado la organización de una serie de lo que ha venido en llamarse Winter School in Complex Analysis and Operator TheoryLa primera edición de esta escuela de invierno, WS-CAOT-06, se celebró en Antequera, Málaga, del 5 al 9 de febrero de 2006. En esta escuela se impartieron tres cursos intensivos de 4 horas:
Además, se impartieron 13 conferencias invitadas sobre distintos temas y hubo incluso una sesión de problemas abiertos. La asistencia fue de casi 60 participantes de nueve países. Un libro incluyendo versiones escritas extendidas de los cursos impartidos salió poco después a la luz. La segunda edición de la escuela de invierno, WS-CAOT-08, tuvo lugar en Sevilla, del 5 al 9 de febrero de 2008, En esta ocasión hubo cuatro cursos intensivos de 4 horas:

Even though this network was born officially at the end of 2004 when we applied for a grant from the spanish "Ministerio de Educación y Ciencia", we can say that its origin goes back to the "2000 World Mathematical Year" when Dragan Vukotic organized a "Miniconference in Complex Variables and Operator Theory" at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid in January and a few days later he also organized a symposium on the same subject in the First RSME Congress which took place at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. Both conferences were about two subjects which are very closely related: on one side the theory of analytic function spaces and, on the other side, operator theory, as well as aspects of other neighboring subjects such as Banach spaces, cyclicity or geometric function theory. The importance and beauty of this Theory, which finds itself at the borderline of distinct disciplines of Mathematical Analysis, resides strongly on the amount of different points of view that can focuss on a particular topic, as well as the amount of different techniques that can be applied and combined together, ranging from real and harmonic analysis to Hilbert and Banach spaces methods, passing thru aspects of hyperbolic geometry, probability theory and others. One of the main objectives sought after (and finally achieved) when organizing these meetings, was to bring together researchers of distinct groups from a number of spanish universitys, which were actively working on the subjects of the Network. Since then several similar events have been organized:
In a more general setting we should also mention that the "VII Encuentros de Análisis Real y Complejo" were organized by Daniel Girela in Torremolinos in May-2002 and the "VIII Encuentros de Análisis Real y Complejo" by Óscar Blasco in Gandía in May-2003. With the organization of all these events, new groups joined the Network and the relation between distinct spanish research groups in the field was becoming closer and closer. This induced us to officially build up this thematic network in the frame of a grant from the spanish "Ministerio de Educación y Ciencia" (acciones complementarias MEC-2004). The official creation of the Network has motivated the organization of a series of what is being called Winter School in Complex Analysis and Operator TheoryThe first edition of this winter school, WS-CAOT-06, took place in Antequera, Málaga, Spain, from February 5th to 9th, 2006. This school contained three intensive 4-hour courses:
Furthermore, there were 13 invited talks on several topics and also a session on open problems. The assistance was about 60 participants from nine countries. A "Proceedings Volume" containing extended written versions of the courses was released shortly afterwards. The second edition of the winter school, WS-CAOT-08, took place in Seville, from February 5th to 9th, 2008. In this occasion there were four intensive 4-hour courses:
