In a successful effort to strengthen academic ties and promote international collaboration, the University of Malaga (UMA) had the honour of welcoming the Rector of the University of the Philippines (UP), Danilo L. Concepción, on January 8, 2024. This event marked the official inauguration of the Philippines Office at the UMA International Hub, located in the idyllic setting of the UMA Botanical Garden.

The relationship between both institutions has historically been robust, as evidenced by previous visits, such as the one made by a UP delegation led by its ambassador, Philippe Jones Lhuillier, in May 2023. Additionally, the Chancellor of the Manila Campus and the Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs of UP also visited UMA on previous occasions to explore new collaborations.

The Philippines is a privileged partner for UMA, and the inauguration of this office is a testament to the continued commitment of both universities to academic and cultural cooperation. The presence of the Philippine Ambassador to Spain, Philippe Jones, and the Vice-Rector for Mobility and International Cooperation of UMA, Susana Cabrera, at the inaugural ceremony underscores the strategic importance of this initiative.

During the visit, various potential areas of collaboration were discussed, ranging from student exchange programmes to joint research projects. The presence of UMA Rector, Teodomiro López, at this event highlights the university's commitment to internationalisation and the promotion of academic excellence globally.

The Philippines Office at the UMA International Hub is conceived as a meeting point where students, professors, and researchers from both institutions can collaborate, exchange knowledge and experiences, and enrich their academic and professional development.

In the words of Rector Teodomiro López, "This new office represents a significant milestone in our relationship with the University of the Philippines. I am confident it will further strengthen our ties and open new opportunities for collaboration in the future."

The inauguration of the Philippines Office at the UMA International Hub marks the beginning of an important new phase in the relationship between the University of Malaga and the University of the Philippines, one that promises mutual benefits and significant advancements in higher education and international research.
