The Construction of Female Sanctity and Visionary Discourse (15th-17th Centuries): Analysis and Recovery of Conventual Writing

The Construction of Female Sanctity and Visionary Discourse (15th-17th Centuries): Analysis and Recovery of Conventual Writing is a research project funded by Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad of Spain (Ref. FFI2012-32073) and directed by Dr Rebeca Sanmartín Bastida. It seeks to understand the construction of the identity of the so-called "holy women" and reconsider the female visionary discourse, which is relevant when studying the literary and social milieu of Medieval and Golden Age Spain.
Our hypothesis is that there is an evolution in the way women represent themselves in the role of visionary who pursues holiness. This development is dissaproved by the censor´s gaze and formed from discoursive and paratheatrical patterns. Thus, it is necessary to consider the literary production written in convents and the male control over it.
The work of this project is particularly relevant for two main reasons: the cultural relevance that these women had at the time, and the need to apply performative perspectives to the study of female spirituality and visionaries in Spain, for it displays important results when devoted to other European cases studies.
