NEAM-COMMITMENT
NEAM- aiming to improve tsunami risk management and planning in the NEAM region. It endeavors to contribute primarily in two key components of tsunami risk governance: in capacity building through tsunami hazard assessment and mapping at the national scale, and in improved tsunami evacuation planning at the local level through a novel multi-hazard approach. The proposal’s first objective is to develop national tsunami inCOMMITMENT is a proposalundation maps in Cyprus, Greece and Spain through the methodology applied to produce tsunami inundation maps for evacuation planning in Italy, aiming to achieve compatible tsunami inundation maps across the NEAM region. The second proposal objective aims to address the need for a multi-hazard approach for effective tsunami evacuation management to complement existing tsunami evacuation management guidelines. The proposed new approach focuses on multi-hazard cascading effects concerning tsunami evacuation and emergency management and will be piloted in local sites in Greece and Italy. Both proposal objectives will be achieved through science-informed and participatory decision making for decision makers to take ownership of the products and to maximize implementation effectiveness. Guidelines will be drafted for the methodologies applied to develop the national tsunami inundation and local tsunami evacuation maps to contribute to improved tsunami risk management planning. The proposal capitalizes on previous/ongoing projects and initiatives, and invests on cross-border knowledge sharing through an extensive scientific and emergency management partnership that will strengthen the cooperation among UCPM Participating States. NEAM-COMMITMENT is expected to make significant contributions to the SFDRR 2015–2030 in strengthening disaster risk governance to manage tsunami risk and enhancing tsunami preparedness for effective response within the framework of the NEAM Tsunami Warning System coordinated by IOC-UNESCO. |

What does EDANYA group do in NEAM-COMMITMENT?
Our contribution to this project is to Work Package 3: Local evacuation multi-hazard mapping through science-informed and participatory decision-making. In particular, we will participate in:
● Assessment of multiple hazards (earthquake and tsunami) in Gytheio will be led by GEM, with contributions from UMA, INGV, NOA, AoA and IHC. Specifically, GEM will be dealing with earthquake shaking scenarios, UMA will assist with the tsunami hydrodynamic simulations performed by INGV who will also implement the local PTHA methodology. NOA and AoA will contribute to local GIS data collection. IHC will contribute in PTHA post-processing and in the preparation of the local workshops;
● Assessment of multiple hazards (volcanic and tsunami) in Stromboli will be led by INGV, with contributions from DPC, MoL, UMA, IHC and NOA. INGV will lead the collection and homogenization of the different hazard models available, including those from volcanic activity, and those from both the earthquake and volcano-triggered tsunamis. UMA is providing their expertise in high-performance tsunami hydrodynamic simulations for the local sPTHA. MoL, with the assistance of DPC and IHCantabria will organize and lead the local workshops.
