DISCOVERING MÁLAGA: GUIDED TOUR OF THE HISTORIC CITY CENTRE FOR SECOND SEMESTER ERASMUS STUDENTS

A first cultural immersion for the new incoming international students at UMA, with the support of the Málaga City Council’s Tourism Department
On March 13th, the newly arrived Erasmus mobility students at the University of Málaga took part in a guided tour of the city’s historic centre, an activity designed to support their integration and familiarize them with their new environment. The initiative was made possible thanks to the Málaga Convention Bureau, part of the Málaga City Council’s Tourism Department, which provided the guides for the tour.
The visit began in Plaza de la Constitución, the heart of urban life in Málaga, where students received an introduction to the city’s historical development. From there, they strolled along the famous Calle Larios, admired the exterior of the Cathedral, and explored significant landmarks such as the Roman Theatre, the Alcazaba, and Plaza del Obispo.
Throughout the tour, the guides shared detailed explanations that helped students understand the multicultural richness that defines Málaga—from its Phoenician and Arab roots to its modern, cosmopolitan identity. The Soho district was also highlighted as an example of urban transformation and contemporary artistic expression.
Activities like this not only promote awareness of local heritage but also help international students integrate into the academic and social life of Málaga, strengthening the connection between the university community and the city that welcomes them.
The University of Málaga extends its special thanks to the Málaga Convention Bureau – Tourism Department of Málaga City Council, for their continued support in welcoming and orienting international students through enriching experiences like this one.
