Massive computations are required in Tsunami Research in order to develop and implement new methodological techniques. Faster Than Real Time (FTRT) tsunami simulations were unfeasible some years ago, but faster and more efficient numerical codes and new computational architectures have made this possible. On the other hand, this increased computational capacity has made it possible to develop methodologies that were not affordable up-to-day due to the enormous computational resources required and the numerical cost. In particular, we refer to PTF (Probabilistic Tsunami Forecast) and PTHA (Probabilisitic Tsunami Hazard Analysis). Access to tier-0 supercomputer resources and to a large number of GPUs has allowed us to run tens of thousands of simulations in just a few weeks using the Tsunami-HySEA code.

 What is Tier - 0 Supercomputers?

High performance computing tiers. PRACE provides "access to leading-edge computing and data management resources and services for large-scale scientific and engineering applications at the highest performance level". PRACE categorises European HPC facilities into 3 tiers: tier-0 are European Centres with petaflop machines, tier 1 are national centres, and tier 2 are regional centres. PRACE details that they have 7 tier-0 systems: Marconi (Italy), Hazel Hen (Germany), JUQUEEN (Germany), SuperMUC (Germany), Piz Daint (Switzerland), CURIE (France), and MareNostrum (Spain). https://prace-ri.eu/hpc-access/hpc-systems/

This information, still in PRACE webpage, is obsolete as Leonardo has replaced Marconi at CINECA (Italy) and Marenostrum5 is the new machine at BSC (Spain). Updated information about EuroHPC systems can be found here.

What EDANYA group does in Tier - 0 Supercomputers?

 We  are performing massive tsunami simulations in the context of the different research problems we re involved. In particular, we are performing simulations for developing PTF (Probabilistic Tsunami Forecast) and PTHA (Probabilistic Tsunami Hazard Analysis). The European project ChEESE has served as catalyzer to conduct this computational boost in Tsunami Research.
