The PhD Program in Advanced Biotechnology is structured in 8 generic lines of research supported by teams (one per line) of solvent, established researchers, with active research projects obtained in competitive concurrence, which add up to about a hundred PhD researchers, national and foreign, belonging to the University of Malaga and with a considerable level of funding (46 active projects obtained in competitive concurrence) that total 54 PhD researchers, national and foreign, belonging to the University of Malaga, the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas, the Spanish Institute of Oceanography, the CIBER-bbn, IFAPA and several foreign universities and research centers (USA, Portugal, Chile, Mexico, UK, Germany).

Most of the researchers participating in this PhD program also teach in the Official Master in Advanced Biotechnology UMA-UNIA, which is currently their training period, and they are developing the curriculum of a new Official Master that should expand this training offer: The Master in Subtropical and Mediterranean Horticulture, which will offer specialized training to future researchers in any of the three lines of Plant Biotechnology (IPP, BVEG, MBEH) in this field so involved in regional development as is the subtropical intensive agriculture of southern Spain of clear socio-economic importance.

The research lines that make up the Advanced Biotechnology program are fully incorporated into the R&D strategy of the University of Malaga, as they form an integral part of several research centers (Bionand, IBIMA, IFAPA, IHSM-UMA-CSIC, Ciber-bbn) of the Campus of International Excellence Andalucía-Tech (, promoted by the Universities of Malaga and Seville, and have privileged access to the associated infrastructure.
