INTRODUCTION

Academic coordinator: Mr.  Rafael Morales Bueno, Ph.D. (email)

The Master's degree in Computer Science has a strong professional focus, creating highly qualified professionals able to undertake the profession of software engineering. The course offers advanced training in aspects of corporate management of technology companies and IT projects, as well as in technological aspects of the different fields of the application of computer engineering. In addition, it allows students to specialise in two highly relevant and important subject areas, those of  Cybersecurity and Data Science and Engineering.

The course encourages the professional development of students through the provision of seminars by professionals in this field. Entrepreneurship and the development of skills associated with professional practices, such as leadership, teamwork and communication skills are also fostered. In addition, from 2016/17 onwards, students will be able to combine their academic education with practical training as part of the dual training system. Under this system, Master’s students can choose to carry out a paid internship in one of the technology companies that has an agreement with the Master. Depending on the type of professional training and the length of the internship, students can obtain up to 13.5 ECT credits. This also gives students preferential access to the PhD Degree in IT Technology at the University of Malaga.

Main goals:

The Master’s degree programme conforms to the guidelines set by the ministerial order published in the Official State Gazette of August 4, 2009, which establishes the requirements for verification of university qualifications in order to exercise the profession of software engineer.

The fundamental objective is to train professionals capable of integrating technologies, applications, services and systems in the contexts of computer engineering and in broader, multidisciplinary contexts. Overall, these studies prepare students for modelling, designing, defining the architecture, implementing, managing, operating, administering and maintaining applications, networks, systems, services and contents.

STUDY PROGRAMME

Students must study a minimum of 90 credits (60 compulsory credits, 18 elective credits and 12 credits from the completion of  the Master’s thesis). Up to 13.5 credits can be awarded for the completion of an internship. The study programme is divided into 4 blocks, each one of them containing different types of modules. Blocks 1 (Leadership and Management) and 2 (IT technology) are compulsory for all students. Block 3 (Complements in IT technology) is optional, while Block 4 corresponds to the Master’s thesis. Block 3, entitled “Complements in IT technology” is divided into two majors: “Major in Cybersecurity” and “Major in Data Science and Engineering”. Students can choose from the elective modules that correspond to each of these majors. The successful completion of at least 18 credits worth of elective modules will result in the student being awarded one of the two majors, otherwise the student will graduate with no major. Academic activities will be complemented in some modules by the holding of seminars and conferences by national and international professors in the field, funded by the International Postgraduate School of the  University of Malaga and the mobility funds of the General Direction of University Policy.

The Master’s degree can be awarded with or without a Major. Students can graduate with a Major if they successfully complete at least 4 elective modules (18 credits worth) of the list of Major specific elective modules. If students successfully complete 18 elective modules, but they do not study at least four modules specific to the Major, they will graduate with a Master’s degree with no Major.

Academic recognition of internships:

Each year at the beginning of the academic term, an offer of internships will be made for Master's students. Students will receive academic recognition in the form of credits for the completion of an internship on provision of an internship report which must be signed by the student, the supervisor within the company and then approved by the Academic Board.

OFFICIAL DOCUMENTATION

INCOMING STUDENT PROFILE AND ENTRY CRITERIA

The Master’s is aimed at graduates from the Bachelor’s Degrees in Computer Science Engineering, Computer Engineering and Software Engineering. Students from other degree programmes that comply with the guidelines set by the ministerial order published in the Official State Gazette of August 4, 2009, which establishes the requirements for verification of university qualifications in order to exercise the profession of software engineer. will also be eligible to apply (see annex II [in Spanish]).

The Master’s Committee can also grant admission to graduates from other similar degree programmes. In this case, and in view of the student’s degree and previous experience, admission may be conditional on the completion of complementary training in order to guarantee that all the guidelines previously mentioned in the ministerial order are sufficiently met. In the case of Computer Science Engineers, the Commission can set a maximum of 30 credits worth of complementary training. For Engineers from other branches, the Commission can set a minimum of 30 and a maximum of 60 credits worth of complementary training. In both cases, the complementary training required for the student is external to the Master’s programme. It will correspond instead to modules offered as part of the School’s Bachelor’s Degree programmes or conversion courses in Computer Science Engineering currently offered by the school.

It is an admission criterion to provide an Spanish and English B1 language accreditation (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages), or only the accreditation for the non native language of the applicant.

Students who satisfy the entry requirements will be evaluated on the following elements:

  • Academic record: 60%.
  • Other accomplishments (fluency in a second language, preferably English, professional experience, relevance of Bachelor’s degree): 40%.
