Juan Antonio García Galindo, Vice chancellor of Institutional Policy, on behalf of the University of Malaga, and José Antonio Sierra Lumbreras, as patron, sign a collaboration agreement to create the George Campbell Prize of Aula María Zambrano of Transatlantic Studies of the University of Malaga, in order to promote the investigations about the relationships between Spain and Ireland.

This Prize is aimed to researches associated to Spanish or Irish universities and the investigations should focus on any kind of relationship (historical, cultural, political, social, economic, etc.) between both countries during the period between 1965 and 2000. The financial envelop will be 1,000€ to the first prize, and 200€ to the second prize. The Prize bases will soon be public on the Aula María Zambrano Transatlantic Studies web site www.uma.es/amzet. The period of participation will start the day that the bases are published and it will extend six months.

The Prize is named after George Campbell, who was an important Irish artist. The painter was born in Arklow, Ireland. He made Malaga his second homeland, where he spent more than six months every year.  His art was influenced by this city, specially his barrio, El Palo, constant item in his work. The creation of this Prize matches the celebration of the first centenary of his birth. On 10th May, 2017 the city hall of Arklow will put a plaque on George Campbell’s home birth.

José Antonio Sierra Lumbreras, international adviser Aula María Zambrano and patron of the Prize has worked as a journalist in several media and as professor in different countries. He was cultural attaché of the Spanish Embassy in Dublin and founder y and director of the Cervantes Institute in the Irish capital.
