Rosario López

Assistant Professor of Moral and Political Philosophy at the Department of Philosophy, University of Málaga.

Between 2013 and 2016, she was Visiting Postdoctoral Fellow and Tutor at the Institute of Intellectual History, School of History (University of St Andrews). She has a PhD in Philosophy from the University of Málaga (2009-13, Spanish Ministry of Education, University Teaching Training Scholarship, FPU). Her doctoral dissertation, Concepts and Historical Contexts in Liberalism’s Intellectual Debates: A Study of John Stuart Mill’s Moral and Political Thought, has been awarded the 2013 ‘Luis Díez del Corral’ Prize for the Best Dissertation in the History of Ideas, Normative Political Theory, and Political Philosophy by the Centre for Political and Constitutional Studies (Centro de Estudios Políticos y Constitucionales, Madrid), and the 2013/14 Doctorate Extraordinary Award, Doctoral Programme Advanced Studies in the Humanities (University of Málaga).

She is one of the editors of the journal Global Intellectual History (Taylor & Francis, www.tandfonline.com/loi/rgih20), and member of the executive board of Concepta: International Research School in Conceptual History and Political Thought (www.concepta-net.org).

Her research interests concern the fields of philosophy, history, and politics. Her postdoctoral project aims at studying Richard Cobden’s economic and political thought in a way that accounts for his cosmopolitan experiences. Richard Cobden (1804-1865) was an experienced traveller who toured Europe several times between 1836 and 1860, although nowadays is best remembered as the leader of the political campaign to repeal the Corn Laws in England. In her project she examines to what extent Cobden’s travels across Europe further shaped his economic and political liberal ideas, either by changing or strengthening them, thus shedding light on how foreign intellectual influences moulded a liberalism established in Britain.

 She is the author of two monographs, Contexts of John Stuart Mill’s Liberalism: Politics and the Science of Society in Victorian Britain (Baden-Baden, Nomos, 2016), and El pensamiento político de John Stuart Mill y su contexto intelectual: Una aproximación conceptual a su liberalismo politico (Madrid, Centro de Estudios Políticos y Constitucionales, 2016).
