INFORMATION SYSTEMS PRIOR TO ENROLLMENT AND ACCESS PROCEDURES FOR WELCOME AND ORIENTATION OF NEW INCOME STUDENTS TO FACILITATE THEIR INCORPORATION TO THE UNIVERSITY AND MASTER’S DEGREE

A).- Methods and requirements to access the title.

The R.D. 1393/2007 of October 29 (BOE October 30) includes in article 14 that access to official postgraduate education will require to be in possession of a university degree. All this regulated information is provided to students through the website of the University of Malaga, http://www.uma.es, where students can get general information about the entry requirements.

Regarding the accessibility of people with disabilities, the University of Malaga, following the principle of equal opportunities and access to university studies, is especially sensitized in this regard so that a disability cannot be understood as a situation that impedes access to studies.

In this sense, since 2005 the University has a specific Service for Attention to Students with disabilities (SAAD) that is responsible for unifying and integrating the care provided in several areas to students with disabilities. It covers an unattended field so far: access and curricular adaptations that demand their special needs.

B).- Information channels to potential students (about the degree and enrolment process).

The different actions implemented by the University of Malaga to inform students about the degree and the enrolment process are the following:

1. ORIENTATION PROGRAM AND STUDENT SUPPORT

This program includes a set of activities aimed at providing university students with exhaustive information on the different official postgraduate degrees offered by the UMA. This program runs once a year.

The main activities developed by the orientation program are the following:

1.1. OPEN DAY

The University of Malaga celebrates the “UMA Destination” open day, a career orientation, every spring. In these days each faculty prepares a stand with a responsible teacher and volunteer students who are in charge of guiding the future university students. For its part, the central services have an informative stand that provides guidance to the student on Access, Enrolment, Scholarships, Culture, Sport, Library Network, etc. Likewise, orientation talks on university admission tests are scheduled for each one of the degrees taught at the UMA. These days are coordinated by the Vice-chancellorship of Students.

Although the open days are focused on a pre-university community, the attendance of a large number of university students has led to the inclusion of university students as a collective of orientations. For this reason, the postgraduate and degree programs of the University of Malaga inform about the different training options. In addition, the different centres of our university inform and advise students about their postgraduate academic offer.

1.2. PARTICIPATION IN NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL FAIRS

The University of Malaga, through the Vice-chancellorships of Academic Organization, Students and International Relations, participates in orientation fairs in places of origin of their students, especially in the Autonomous Community of Andalusia (local fairs in Lucena and Los Barrios) and in Madrid (Aula). Likewise, the University of Malaga participates in international fairs where the general academic offer of the university is promoted (NAFSA, ACFTL in the United States, ICEF China Workshop, etc.) and also the specific postgraduate offer, especially in Latin America (Europosgrado Chile, Europosgrado Argentina,…) being an active member of the Association of Iberoamerican Postgraduate Universities (AIPU).

2. WEB PORTAL

The University of Malaga maintains a Portal for potential postgraduate students, which includes information on:

>  Access to postgraduate degrees at the University of Malaga

>  Guide to degrees, study plans and subjects

>  Scholarships

3. MAGAZINE AND ORIENTATION PAMPHLETS ADDRESSED TO POTENCIAL STUDENTS

The Postgraduate Office of the UMA publishes an information brochure aimed at potential postgraduate students. Its content in electronic format is also available on the UMA website.

4. UNIVERSITY INFORMATION POINTS

The University of Malaga has 3 information points, one in the Teatinos Campus, another in the El Ejido Campus and the third one in the Rectorate, in which information is offered to university students. The opening hours are from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

C).-  Accesible information systems prior to enrolment (academic information procedure on the learning process planification).

The University of Malaga has made available to students and, in general, all citizens a portal that provides information on the teaching programming of the different degrees offered by the University Centres and for different academic courses, called PROA system.

In this way, the immediate and updated information is provided. This portal is located at the web address http://www.uma.es/ordenac. The PROA system for the academic programming provides the necessary procedures to carry out the teaching programming tasks of the UMA as well as the management of the study plans. It is an open system and integrated with the information systems of the University. Specifically, the information systems HOMINIS (human resources management) that provides information about the administrative data of professors, according to departments and their specialties, MINERVA (student files management) that provides information about the degrees offered by the University, study plans, subjects, number of students enrolled, etc.

PROA is a centralized information system regarding its information but distributed with respect to its functionality. The information is updated in Centres, Departments and Vice-chancellorship of Academic Organization, according to competences.

Since the contents published in PROA are of special interest for students who are going to formalize their enrolment for the next academic year, the fact that this information is available before the enrolment period begins has been prioritized.

Regarding the study plans and the academic offer for each University Centre, it is possible to consult the degrees offered and their corresponding distribution of credits. At the same time, the subjects taught in each course of the degree are detailed.

The information of the teaching programming contains for each subject, in addition to the basic data, the groups of training activities, the learning process planification of each subject and its evaluation process, the schedules, the rooms assigned and the professors.

The complete program of any subject (objectives, teaching methodology, evaluation system, detailed content and bibliography) can be consulted, as well as the tutoring schedule of professors and the exam schedules.

Each subject can be located directly through multiple search criteria that can be specified. This information can be obtained for a complete degree or for a cycle or course of the same.
