The provisional resolution (AEI Resolution) regarding applications in the call for Knowledge Generation Projects (2023) has been published, and members of the IIO have obtained funding of 230,125 € for a project called "Heterogeneous Underwater Networks for Collaborative, Dynamic and Cost-Effective Exploration (NEMO4EX)", which aims to increase the performance and autonomy of underwater vehicles (AUVs).

This project, led by the principal investigators Miguel Angel Luque Nieto (IIO) and Alicia Triviño Cabrera, is a coordinated project between four universities: UNED, Polytechnic of Madrid, University of Cádiz and University of Málaga. In the UMA subproject, all the participants are researchers belonging to the IIO: Pablo Otero, Mª del Carmen Clemente, Alfonso Ariza, and Alberto Poncela.

Twilight Conference from November 21 to 22, 2024

The researcher Pablo Otero participates in the Twilight Conference organized by Monodon, the radical innovation area of Navantia, a state-owned shipbuilding company that promotes research in “deeptech” technologies and its dissemination.

It is a new concept of scientific conference focused on disruptive technologies with speakers from all over the world (USA, Japan, Australia, UK, European Union...) that will take place on November 21st and 22nd at CEHIPAR INTA, located in Madrid, and will be broadcasted through Twitch and youtube, streaming platforms aimed at generation Z.

The key topics are: underwater robotics, robotic swarms, neuroscience for neuromorphic computing development, new materials and biomaterials.

Importance of a study on marine litter pollution of anthropogenic origin

Nowadays there is a high presence of plastics in the marine environment, being one of the most worrying environmental problems due to its increasing magnitude, which not only affects the scientific community but the whole society.

The researcher Javier Soto Navarro has participated in an important study that evaluates the spatio-temporal requirements for marine litter sampling in the Mediterranean Sea. This study conducted by the University of Malaga and the Oceanographic Center of the Balearic Islands emphasizes the importance of making accurate estimates of marine debris pollution from human activity.

“The Mediterranean Sea, characterized as a semi-enclosed basin with intense demographic pressure, is one of the regions of the world most vulnerable to this type of pollution, with direct effects on its very high biodiversity,” says researcher Javier Soto Navarro of the Department of Applied Physics II of the University of Malaga. The results of this work have been published in the journal ‘Marine Pollution Bulletin’.
