-  PostDoctoral Researcher in Machine Learning / Analysis and Modeling of Big Data  (10/10/2018)

University of Southern California Open Position for PostDoctoral Researcher in Machine Learning / Analysis and Modeling of Big Data and Systems (WiDeS) group at USC is exploring novel ways of applying big-data analysis tools to the prediction of cellular coverage and planning of 5G networks. Based on large sets of data, we aim to find stochastic models for attenuation and other properties of wireless signals that take into account the statistics of the environment. The key challenge is to identify which of the statistics of the environment (e.g., street width, building height,…) play the most important role, and how to model their impact in a robust way.

We are looking for a PostDoc with expertise in big data analysis, preferably in the area of dimensionality reduction and/or statistical modeling. The project also aims to explore new tools, including deep learning, to the problem; interest (though not necessarily experience) in that field is beneficial. Expertise in wireless communication, propagation, etc., is not required – ample experience in this field is available at the WiDeS group, and the data can be easily abstracted to a generic big data problem.

Interested researchers that will be available no later than January 2019 are encouraged to submit their application to Prof. Andy Molisch at molisch@usc.edu. Please provide a CV and a cover letter pointing out the particular skills related to this project.

- Musical acoustics postdoctoral opportunity - Bordeaux (19/09/2018)

General information

contract type: post-doctoral position

location: Inria Bordeaux Sud-Ouest (33405 Talence)

team: Magique3D

keywords: applied math, numerical method simulations, musical acoustics

duration: 12 months renewable 12 months (24 months in total)

About the research center and the team

 The main objective of Magique3D team is to apply recent numerical methods findings to various domain (from geophysics to musical acoustics) regarding wave propagation. Magique3D develops sophisticated models taking into account the complexity of the underlying physical phenomenon considered. Then, appropriate techinques are implemented leading to the solving of large systems and, consequently, the development of sophisticated numerical methods.

Context and advantages of the offer

Collaboration between Magique3D, the institute of mechanic and engineering of the university of Bordeaux I2M and musical instrument makers. The objective of this project is to overcome the restrictions brought by traditional instrument making techniques, proposing to instrument makers a virtual laboratory allowing them to design new instruments, thanks to scientific approaches.

Missions

 For ages, instrument makers design, in their laboratories, innovations at the root of famous and memorable musical trends. A classic example is the one of Adolphe Sax, who designed, in the first half of the nineteenth century, an instrument which deeply changed the musical landscape of the second half of the twentieth century with jazz music. Often with modest knowledge in Acoustics, instrument makers are able to adjust the instrument's parameters (mainly the geometrical ones) in order to improve their musical quality, given the subjective criteria resulting from the perception of the listeners and musicians. Regarding the saxophone, we will recall that after the purchase of the sax's invention and laboratory, Henry Selmer improved substantially the instrument to give to the musician the famous Mark IV. Although this secular practice led to the creation of exceptional instruments, inherent limitations related to the empirical approach of handcraft restrain future breakthroughs and potential evolution of instrument making. Indeed, specific tools and prototypes are needed for the design of new instruments. Besides, manual tuning of numerous geometrical parameters leads to inextricable situations, from which only complex compromises can be reached. For several centuries, musical acoustics tries to rationalize this empirical knowledge in order to understand the reasons under the instruments designs, and to contribute to future breakthrough thanks to a scientific approach. Indeed, our advanced understanding of acoustical phenomena, associated with important resources allocated to scientific calculation, let us explore new dimensions in the design of musical instruments. In the case of wind instruments, it is now possible thanks to physics-based models, to precisely model the instrument acoustical behavior from the sole knowledge of its interior geometry (called the bore). Then, if this direct model is realistic enough, the inverse problem can be considered, which aims at retrieving a set of instruments that correspond to a certain range of target acoustic characteristics. Optimization strategies will be developed and will seek, in design spaces as large as possible, ideal instruments thanks to heavy computational resources.

Principal activities

In order to achieve this goal, we have constituted a consortium composed of members of the Inria team Magique 3D, of a member of the institut de mécanique et d'ingénierie (I2M) of Bordeaux university, and an instrument maker. An acoustic bench is under construction thanks to this consortium, and allows to measure the entry impedance of the instruments. A simulation code that computes this impedance via modern techniques (finite elements) is also under development. The hired person will contribute to the quantitative definition of optimisation criteria, but also to the relevant definition of design variables. This will be done in constant collaboration with the instrument maker who will guide the possible choices thanks to his expertise and experience. The hired person will also contribute to the implementation of the optimization code that will seek the optimal instruments according to previously established criteria. He/She will also contribute to the prototyping of the proposed instruments, and to their evaluation. One of the main challenges of these two years will be to determine if criteria based on linear description will be su_cient in order to evaluate instruments quality.

- Post-doc position on security and control of drone swarms (05/06/2018)

A post-doc position on security for will be soon available at the Department of Information Engineering, University of Padova, Italy (http://www.dei.unipd.it).

The activity will start as soon as a candidate is identified, presumably after the summer, and will last for 12 months.

The abstract of the project research activity associated to the post-doc position follows:

Among many applications of quadcopters, their employment in swarms is particularly relevant in critical scenarios, i.e., environmental monitoring and search and rescue operations. Quadcopter navigation commonly relies on navigation satellite signals, which in such context can be easily spoofed or jammed or simply denied with the effect of disrupting swarm movements, thus representing a security issue. The project aims at making the navigation of quadcopter formations and swarms robust to navigation-sensors anomalies and attacks from devices external/internal to the swarm. Through distributed machine-learning techniques for automated anomaly detection and data fusion techniques on alternative on-board sensors, we aim at designing algorithms for the attack/fault detection, the navigation to perform the safe homecoming of the swarm.

 The candidates are expected to:

     * have completed his/her Ph.D. degree in EE, CS, or a related field;
     * have performed original research in the area of security and/or navigation;
     * be able to work independently, as well as in a team; and
