Quality control of doctoral theses
1. Each academic and quality committee will propose to the Postgraduate Committee the minimum quality criteria for a doctoral thesis to be eligible for submission. Once approved by the Doctoral School, these criteria will be published on the website of the corresponding program.
2. The criteria referred to in this article will be applied to theses that have been developed in at least one academic year and that have obtained a positive evaluation.
3. In compliance with the criteria established by each academic and quality committee, it must be required that, during the process of preparing the doctoral thesis, the doctoral candidate has generated quality contributions directly related to his or her thesis work.
4. Quality contributions are those that may be assessed as such according to the quality criteria of ANECA in each area as established by the corresponding academic committee, as well as the specific assessments (ordinary and extraordinary) of CNEAI. When ANECA or CNEAI do not establish in detail scores of less than 1 point for each publication, the academic and quality committee will define the corresponding scores that allow each contribution to be assigned a value of 0, 0.5, 0.75 or 1 point.
5. The assessment criteria referred to in the previous section will be published on the website of the doctoral program. The following are requirements for contributions submitted to support a thesis:
- a) That they have been published, or accepted for publication, exhibition or reproduction, after the date of registration of the doctoral student in the program.
- b) That the University of Malaga is included in them, through the affiliation of the person directing the thesis and/or the doctoral student.
- c) That the doctoral student is included in them as the first or second author. Only in truly exceptional cases, the corresponding academic and quality committee may authorize, in view of the justifications presented and with the approval of the Postgraduate Committee, that the doctoral student appears in a position after the second. This will not apply in disciplines in which alphabetical order in authorship or order by institution is usual, in which case the doctoral student will justify his or her contribution and the relationship of the contribution with the thesis.
6. For areas of knowledge in which ANECA and/or CNEAI recognize criteria or extraordinary evaluations different from publications, the corresponding academic and quality committee will submit to the Postgraduate Committee, for approval, the proposal of complements to the evaluation criteria. These supplements will not exceed half of these criteria.
Originality of doctoral theses
1. When submitting his or her thesis, the doctoral candidate will include at the beginning of the document:
- a) A written and signed declaration, in which he or she will be responsible for the authorship and originality of the research work, ensuring, under his or her full responsibility, that he or she has complied with the legal obligations regarding intellectual and industrial property, and which will include the approval of those who have directed and supervised the work. The text of this declaration will be approved by the Postgraduate Committee and made available to students on the Doctoral School website.
- b) The reports of those who have directed and supervised the thesis, which will certify that it has been carried out by the doctoral candidate under his or her direction or supervision.
2. If the thesis supervisor detects signs or evidence of an activity of academic fraud, allegedly committed by the doctoral candidate under his or her supervision, he or she must inform the director of the Doctoral School and the corresponding academic and quality committee, by means of a written document addressed to both, with a view to initiating the review procedure and, where appropriate, the sanction, in accordance with the provisions of the Protocol on academic ethics of the University of Malaga of October 25, 2019.
Authorization and documentation necessary for the admission of the thesis for processing
Once the research work has been completed and the previous procedures have been completed, the doctoral candidate will request authorization from the corresponding academic and quality committee, through the computer application that manages the Doctoral Student's Activities Document, for the admission of his or her doctoral thesis for processing. Together with the application, the following documentation must be provided.
a) A copy of the thesis in electronic format. Following the cover page there will be a declaration of authorship and the reports of those who have directed and supervised the thesis, as provided for in article 65.1.
b) Curriculum vitae of the doctoral candidate, specifying the scientific activities
