The molecular level is essential to the understanding of the structure and working of all living things. At the molecular level, the complexity of their form, structure, organisation, and purpose acquires a uniformity of principles and mechanisms which allows for further understanding and knowledge about aspects related to human intervention; such as in health and nutrition, as well as the environment. Therefore, terms such as “Molecular Life Sciences” o “Molecular Biosciences” are increasingly being used to refer to areas based on Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.

During the XXth century, advances in basic and applied research in these areas have been outsounding, and will be even more so in this century. Furthermore, in the last 40 years, the increase and improvement of research in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology has also been notable in Spain; in fact, it is the first discipline in terms of scientific contribution and international impact.
