FAQs PhD Program on Health Sciences

What are the specific requirements to access a doctoral program?

Each doctoral program can establish specific admission requirements, which must be met by students who wish to enter them, and may require that a minimum score be reached in the evaluation of their merits, the presentation of a letter of endorsement, or whether the program can attend the line of research requested, etc. For the Doctoral Program in Health Sciences, the specific requirements can be consulted on its website. Additionally, the Academic Committees of the doctoral programs may require that the students who need it, once admitted to the program, take a series of training complements during their first year to complement their competences and skills on research methods.

Can more than one access requirement be met?

Yes. The applicant can add the access routes they want if they have different degrees that meet the access requirements.

Why, even meeting the access requirements, can I NOT be admitted to a Doctoral Program?

In addition to having the required requirements, it must be taken into account that the offer of places is limited, with the allocation of places being carried out based on the score obtained in the evaluation of their merits.

What is the calendar to request pre-registration?

Generally, it opens in November for the general phase and in September for the pre-doctoral scholarship candidate phase. However, there may be variations from one year to another, so it is important to consult the UMA Doctoral Service website in advance.

Can I participate in pre-enrollment in a doctoral program of which I have been a student and have permanently been dropped out from it?

No. Definitive withdrawal implies not being able to re-enroll in a program from which you have been dropped out, being able to pre-enroll in another Program.

Can I apply for admission to various doctoral programs?

Yes. A student can apply for admission to various doctoral programs, both at the University of Malaga and at other universities. In the case of applying for admission to several programs, you must submit an individual application to each of the programs in which you are interested.

How can I access if I have a degree obtained from a foreign university?

We must differentiate between foreign degrees taken in countries of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) whose studies are structured in European ECTS credits and degrees from both EHEA and non-EHEA countries, whose studies are not structured in European ECTS credits. The former must accredit a level of training equivalent to the corresponding Spanish University Master's degrees and the latter, certify that their title enables access to PhD studies in the issuing country.

Can I enroll in the following academic year without having to apply again to the doctoral program?

No. The application for admission is made for a specific course. If a student is admitted, but does not formalize his enrollment that year, he must reapply for admission if he/she wants to enroll in another year.

What is the cost of studying for a Doctorate?

The public prices of the public universities of Andalusia are established by the Decree of public prices published annually by the Junta de Andalucía.

When I am notified of the provisional results of the assessment of the merits, does it mean that I have been admitted to a doctoral program and that I can directly enroll?

No. This notification serves to communicate to the applicant the score that the Academic Committee of the Program has awarded when validating his or her application. Next, a deadline for claims is opened and, on the date established in the pre-registration calendar, you will be notified if the place has been awarded, if you have been excluded, or if you are on the waiting list.

What does it mean that I am on the waiting list?

In the event that there are more applicants meeting the access requirements than places offered, if you have not obtained a place, you will be assigned a place on the waiting list. If any of those admitted does not formalize the enrollment within the term granted, the waiting list is managed, calling the first person on the list in order to offer him or her the place that has been left free.

Can I do the doctorate by distance learning?

Doctoral studies imply a close relationship with the supervisors of the thesis (tutors and directors) and, although the research could be conducted in any city, region or country other than Malaga (provided that the necessary normative, operational and ethical requirements are met), doctoral students must hold regular meetings and tutorials with their supervisors. In addition, the thesis must be defended at the University of Malaga, except in the modality of co-joint thesis, which it allows to be defended at the other participating University.

Can I do my doctorate in a language other than Spanish?

This aspect should be specified in the pre-admission application so that the Academic Committee takes it into account when assigning tutors and supervisors.
