On May 15, 2012, the Governing Council of the University of Malaga approved the foundations for the development of the third Strategic Plan. Chaired by the Chancellor, Adelaida de la Calle, the objectives and action lines of the institution were set out for the period 2013-2016. The foundations were presented to the Senate by Carlos Á. Benavides, Director of Social Responsibility and Strategic Plan on June 4 and were favourably reported by the Social Council on June 27.

After six months of work, the Working Committees, selected by the university community and consisting of members of the community, established the actions of the new Strategic Plan. It was presented to the Senate on December 17, approved by the Governing Council on December 20 and favourably reported by the Social Council on December 21.
