IMEE Thesis Regulations

The doctoral thesis is an original research work. The regulations governing the format, the composition of the tribunal, and the reading of the doctoral thesis can be found in Titles 4, 5, and 6 of the Doctoral Regulations of the UMA.

The documents required for the thesis reading of RD 99/2011 can be found here.

Decree 99/2011, which regulates doctoral studies, establishes that all defended doctoral theses must be archived by the university in an open electronic format and in an institutional repository.  The procedure for the publication of doctoral theses can be found at the following link.

QUALITY CRITERIA FOR THE DEFENSE OF DOCTORAL THESES IN THE DOCTORAL PROGRAM IN MECHANICAL ENGINEERING AND ENERGY EFFICIENCY

Pursuant to Article 64 on Quality control of doctoral theses, of the Regulations of the Doctoral School of the University of Malaga, the Academic Committee of the Doctoral Program in Mechanical Engineering and Energy Efficiency has decided to establish the following minimum quality criteria for a doctoral thesis to begin the process of evaluation and defense:

1.-It will be required that, during the process of elaboration of the doctoral thesis, the doctoral student has generated quality contributions directly related to his thesis work and that at least one of them has been published in a journal of the Science Citation Index or is an international patent in exploitation.

2.- The following are requirements for the contributions submitted to support a thesis:

 a. That they have been presented, published, or accepted for publication, display, or reproduction after the date of enrollment of the doctoral student in the Doctoral Program.

 b. That the University of Malaga is included in them, through the affiliation of the director and/or the doctoral candidate.

 c. That the doctoral student appears as the first or second author of all of them.

3.- With these quality contributions a total score equal to or higher than 1* point must be obtained, according to the following table:

Contribution

Score

Contribution published in a journal indexed in the Journal Citation Reports (JCR) of the Science Citation Index.(a),(b)

Magazine located in the first tercile (T1)

1 point

Magazine located in the second tercile (T2)

0.75 points

Magazine located in the third tercile (T3)

0.5 points

An international patent in operation

1 point

Exceptionally, in those cases in which the subject of the thesis is characterized by an activity that includes elements of artistic creation, contributions of verifiable quality, consisting of architectural or urban projects or other contributions that comply with the above, articles published in journals of international circulation and recognized prestige or books of international diffusion and reference, may be valued.

In this case, they will only be considered when they are directly linked to the thesis and meet the quality criteria set by the CNEAI in the latest resolution in force. To this end, the Academic Committee of the Doctoral Program must approve a report submitted by the doctoral student and his/her director/s, in which the quality criteria on the dissemination, relevance, and impact of the doctoral student's contribution are clearly described. The Academic Committee of the Doctoral Program will assign a score to each contribution presented in this section.

Maximum 0.2 points per contribution

Maximum of 0.5 points in this section.

(a) Publications must be articles from peer-reviewed journals indexed in the Journal Citation Reports (JCR) of the Science Citation Index. The articles must have been published or accepted (to be demonstrated with a letter from the editor, DOI, or electronic publication). The position in the JCR will be that of the year of publication or, failing that, that of the last known year. (b) In the case of theses by a compendium of publications, it is established that, as a general rule, at least three contributions must be articles published in journals indexed in the Journal Citation Reports (JCR) of Science Citation Index.

*However, as a transitional measure, the UMA Postgraduate Commission has established a period of adaptation, regulating the minimum score that the contributions will have to obtain in order to begin the process of defense of the doctoral thesis, depending on the year of enrollment.

  • Doctoral students enrolled during the 2013-2014 academic year: 0.5 points.
  • Doctoral candidates enrolled during the 2014-2015 academic year: 0.75 points.
  • Doctoral students enrolled during the academic year 2015-2016 and following: 1 point.
